Ebola in West Africa

Dear Fellow Rotarians of District 5360

The Ebola epidemic in West Africa has been going on for nearly a year. The incidence of new cases continues to rise and the case fatality rate remains high at 70%. Desperately-needed aid has been and continues to be slow in arriving so the suffering and loss of life continues to increase. Help is needed urgently! The Rotary Club of Canmore and its Charitable Foundation have decided to act by supporting the Ebola prevention projects of our partner NGO, CAUSE Canada, in one of the most affected countries of the epidemic, Sierra Leone.

As you will see from the information attached, CAUSE has several initiatives that concentrate on public health education reaching more than half a million people. The first project entitled “Protection, Care and Support of Children Affected by Ebola Virus Disease” is valued at $70,000. This initiative, being implemented by CAUSE Canada at the request of UNICEF, will receive $63,000 from that agency. We have allocated $7,000 to complete the funding of this part of their program and have raised a further $4,000 within our club toward further support. We are now appealing to the wider Canmore community and would like to offer you, the larger Rotary community, the opportunity to join us.

If you have not already contributed and would like to help, your cheques can be made payable to Canmore Rotary Club Charitable Foundation with “Ebola Emergency Fund” in the memo field and mailed to: Canmore Rotary Club Charitable Foundation, P.O. Box 8025 Canmore, AB T1W 2T8. Donations can also be made on-line at www.rotaryclubofcanmore.ca/charitablefoundation or CanadaHelps.org website (enter “Canmore Rotary” and click on Option #7 under where to apply your donation).

The CAUSE team, already in the field, is in the process of providing public health education targeting more than a half a million people and is caring for children affected by Ebola. However, without ongoing funding this work cannot continue. Also, without a massive prevention campaign the epidemic will not be contained. Acute care by frontline health workers only deals with those already sick and doesn’t stop the spread of the disease.

CAUSE Canada has been a partner of the Canmore Rotary Club for many of our international projects over the last twenty years. Its Sierra Leonean workers are experienced and CAUSE has been the implementing agency for many projects sponsored by CIDA, UNICEF, and many larger NGO’s. Our money will be put to use immediately and spent effectively.

Ebola Virus Disease is an ongoing medical emergency and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked developed countries to stop being complacent and to markedly increase support for affected countries. Sierra Leone is the epicentre of the Ebola epidemic and we, the Rotary Club of Canmore have a longstanding, close and direct connection with that country through our partner CAUSE Canada. We are in a position where we can make a significant difference and we invite you to join us.

Please feel free to share this information with your friends and family.

Yours in Rotary,
